TechWomen is all about empowering and connecting women who aspire to lead in STEM fields. It gives them the chance to boost their careers and chase their dreams while becoming role models for the girls in their communities.

This program also supports the U.S. in advancing women’s rights globally by helping them reach their full potential in tech. Since it kicked off in 2011, TechWomen has been an initiative by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, managed by the Institute of International Education.

Costs of TechWomen

Here’s what TechWomen covers:

  • Roundtrip flight from your home country to the U.S.
  • Domestic flight from San Fran or Chicago to D.C.
  • Housing during mentorship in the Bay Area or Chicago.
  • Meals and extra expenses.
  • Hotel stay in Washington, D.C.
  • Public transport to your host company.
  • Local transport for group events in all cities mentioned.

Eligibility for TechWomen

To apply you should:

  • Have at least two years of full-time work in STEM at the time you apply.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or something similar. Please note internships or unpaid work don’t count towards the two-year requirement.
  • Be good at reading and speaking English.
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of one of these places: Albania, Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Palestinian Territories, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, or Zimbabwe.
  • Be eligible for a U.S. J-1 exchange visitor visa.
  • Not have applied for a U.S. immigrant visa in the last five years (except for the Diversity Visa Lottery).
  • Not hold U.S. citizenship or be a permanent resident.

They’ll give preference to applicants who:

  • Are living and working in a TechWomen program country during application and program.
  • Show themselves as rising leaders in their field through work, volunteering or studies.
  • Plan to return home after to share their new knowledge and mentor others.
  • Have little to no prior experience in the U.S.
  • Have a history of volunteering or public service.
  • Have a strong entrepreneurial spirit and innovative mindset.
  • Are open to exchange experiences, eager for mentorship and new partnerships, and show confidence and maturity.

Application

The application for TechWomen 2025 is now open and you can apply until January 7, 2025, at 9:00 AM PST. You’ll know if you are selected or not by April 30, 2025. Finally decisions will be announced by May 31, 2025, and everyone will be notified of the results.
